Zweigart Aida for Cross Stitch

Zweigart Aida is a popular choice for cross stitch thanks to its clearly defined squares, which make it easy to see exactly where each stitch should be placed.

Aida is available in different fabric counts. The count tells you how many squares there are per inch of fabric. For example, 14 count Aida has 14 squares per inch, while 16 and 18 count fabrics have progressively smaller squares and produce a finer finished design.

Zweigart Evenweave Fabric

For stitchers wanting more flexibility than traditional Aida, Zweigart evenweave fabric provides an evenly spaced structure that can be stitched over one or multiple fabric threads.

Popular Zweigart evenweaves include Lugana and Brittney, offering a smooth surface for cross stitch and other counted-thread embroidery.

When stitching over two threads, the effective stitch size is half the fabric count. For example, stitching over two on 28 count evenweave produces approximately the same stitch size as 14 count Aida.

Zweigart Linen

For a traditional look and natural texture, Zweigart linen is a favourite for cross stitch, samplers and counted-thread embroidery.

The range includes well-known Zweigart fabrics such as Cashel 28ct, Belfast 32ct, Edinburgh 36ct and Newcastle 40ct, along with finer-count linens for detailed needlework.

As with evenweave, linen is often cross stitched over two fabric threads. This means 28 count linen gives a stitch size similar to 14 count Aida, 32 count is similar to 16 count Aida, and 36 count is similar to 18 count Aida.

Which Zweigart Fabric Count Should I Choose?

Your ideal fabric count depends on the pattern, the level of detail you want and how comfortable you are working with smaller stitches.

Lower counts have larger spaces and are generally easier to see and stitch. Higher-count fabrics create smaller stitches, allowing for finer detail and a more compact finished design.

Always check the fabric count recommended by your cross stitch pattern before starting, particularly if the finished dimensions of the design are important.
